How to explain to my child what happens inside their body when bedwetting occurs?

How do you explain the process of bedwetting to your child? It can be hard if we don’t even know it ourselves! That’s why In the download below this article I’ve included a really simple way to explain what happens inside the body when all the parts work together.

I’ll talk you through it now as well.

Tell your child that it’s the kidney’s job to make urine, which goes down tubes into the bladder.

The bladder is like a water balloon that holds the urine.

There is a muscle gate that holds the urine in. When the bladder is full it sends a message to the brain and the brain tells the gate to open.

Tell your child that, in order to be the boss of his or her urine at night, all the parts need to work together.

  1. The kidneys must make the right amount of urine
  2. The bladder must hold it and tell the brain when it is full
  3. Then the brain must either tell the gate to stay closed until morning, or tell the child to wake up to use the toilet.

It’s so simple yet so effective for a child to understand how all the parts work.

Have fun with it too! Draw some pictures as you explain the process. Or even use a real balloon to demonstrate the bladder filling up then emptying.
